Pedestrians Injured by Bicyclists in New York City

More Common Than Previously Thought

While pedestrians are generally in fear of being involved with in an accident with a motorist, bicyclists are a threat as well. The roads of New York City are filled with bicycles, especially with the recent launch of the Citi Bike Share Program, which has added thousands of more New York bicycle riders on the streets. Pedestrians should be aware that bicyclists who cause accidents and injuries have the same legal responsibility as car and truck drivers.

If you are a pedestrian who was injured by a bicyclist, you may be entitled to compensation. For more information or to consult with an experienced attorney, you should contact the expert legal team at Gersowitz, Libo & Korek.

Bicycle v. Pedestrian: The Statistics Show Bike-on Pedestrian Accidents Are More Prevalent Than Previously Thought

In an ongoing bike lane debate, there always seem to be a small group of people who complain about being rundown by bicyclists. As much as this may seem like an empty complaint, some studies have proven otherwise. Bicycles, especially on the busy streets of New York City, do pose some threat and danger to pedestrians.

According to a study from bike report happy Hunter College, there are definitely more accidents between these two groups than previously thought. This present study, which is based on every hospital in New York State, reveals that in this state alone, there were approximately 1,000 pedestrians struck by New York City bicycle riders each year necessitating medical treatment at a hospital.

The study further revealed that the majority of bicycle-related pedestrian accidents occur around the 10029 zip code in Manhattan. However, if looing at the number of injured pedestrians by boroughs, Brooklyn is by the most dangerous borough to walk near bicyclists in, as it reported 34.4 percent of the pedestrian victims. Manhattan comes in at number two, with 28.1 percent of the reported pedestrian versus bicycle accidents.

Reduction in Bike-on Pedestrian Accidents

Although the Hunter study shows that pedestrian-cyclist accidents are more common that previously thought, it is also important to note that there is no important information about the facts surrounding the actual accidents.  We do not know how these accidents occurred, who was at fault or how serious the injuries were.

Regardless, if you were involved in a bike-on pedestrian accident, you may have certain legal rights as the at-fault bicyclist may be held accountable for their negligent actions and carelessness in more ways than one. You may be entitled to monetary damages through a civil judgment.
